Precautions and Considerations
Before starting the process of resetting your HP laptop without the recovery key, I suggest you take a backup because it’s essential to take precautions beforehand.
Backing up your data and understanding the potential risks should be prioritized.
It is better to take some time & take some precautionary actions early to avoid pain in the head later.
Temporary Disabling BitLocker
After following these steps successfully, you have to disable BitLocker temporarily by following these steps below:
- You have to make sure you have administrative privileges on your HP laptop
- You should have an external drive or any cloud storage for the backup files.
- Right-click on the drive then select manage Bitlocker & select Suspend protection.
- After disabling Bitlocker temporarily take a backup of those files in an external drive or cloud storage as mentioned earlier.
- After copying the necessary files, re-enable Bitlocker on the drive by following the same steps for disabling it. Select “Manage Bitlocker,” and then choose “Resume Protection.”
Third-party Backup software:
You can use any third-party Backup software from the following mentioned below if you can’t disable BitLocker temporarily from the File Explorer option:
- Acronis True Image,
- EaseUS Todo Backup,
- AOMEI Backupper,
- Macrium Reflect,
- Paragon Backup & Recovery.
Windows Backup and Restore:
If you are using Windows then you can use the built-in Backup and Restore feature if you windows allow you to do so if not then you can use a third-party application as mentioned earlier:
- Go to “Control Panel” then click on “System and Security option” then click on “Backup and Restore Option”.
- Set up a backup schedule or choose the instant backup option and choose the destination for your backup files where you want to save the backup. I would suggest you take a backup on a USB or external storage device in case anything happens to the hard drive.
Tips for taking backup:
- Make sure you have the necessary permissions to disable and enable Bitlocker on the drive.
- Only disable Bitlocker temporarily for the duration of the backup process dont forget about turning it on again. Re-enable it as soon as the backup is complete to maintain security.
- If using third-party backup software, ensure it explicitly mentions compatibility with Bitlocker-encrypted drives, because sometimes these software are not capable of taking complete backups of the encrypted drives due to permission & parameters.
Bootable USB
I have compiled Step-by-step instructions to reset your HP laptop without the recovery key using a bootable USB:
Windows Password Reset Disk
Now I will share the “Using Windows Password Reset Disk” method which allows you to reset the password on your HP laptop if you dont have a Bitlocker Recovery key & you have previously created a Windows password reset disk.
Follow these steps which I have explained below:
- Ensure that you have your Windows password reset disk available. This is a disk or USB drive you created before BitLocker was enabled on your laptop.
- Insert the Windows password reset disk into the appropriate drive on your HP laptop.
- Start or restart your laptop and wait until you reach the login screen.
- Once you’ve entered an incorrect password, a message should appear indicating that the password is incorrect. Look for an option like “Reset Password” or “I Forgot My Password” and click on it.
- The system will prompt you to select the password reset disk. Choose the disk or USB drive you inserted in step 2.
- Follow the instructions on the password reset wizard to create a new password for your user account. Make sure it’s a password you can remember.
- After successfully creating a new password, restart your HP laptop and log in using the newly set password.
