Dusting off the hammer to smash your old laptop? Hold on there, tech-wreck! We’ve got smarter (and safer) ways to say goodbye.
Let’s ditch the drama and dispose of the laptops right away!
You might be disposing of things the wrong way or the old ones would have been lying in your home taking extra space, don’t worry.
I have shared some methods from my personal experience and knowledge from my team and some thoughts I have gathered from my fellow gamers.
Preparing laptop before disposing
You are wondering what is the purpose of disposing of it because it’s just a little laptop that can be thrown away anywhere wherever you like but unfortunately.
You are wrong because e-waste is a threat to the environment & it is unhealthy to your health.
Other than environmental impact your old laptop could hold a lot of data that should be erased in a way that cannot be restored by any method because if data goes into the wrong hands it could be harmful to you.
Before discussing the disposing options I would like to share some important things which you can say preparations are necessary before disposing the laptop.
You can skip this if you have done this part or you do not seem interested in it.
You have to make a backup of the important data that you have on your laptop, you can store that data in an external SSD drive or you can store that data in USB if data is not much.
You can also go for cloud storage if you can afford it and you have a lot of data.
If your data is not more than 15GB then you can simply store it on Google Drive.
Because most probably you have a Gmail account which you use, if you don’t have one then create one and upload data in that drive.
And for other data, you can use software like DBAN or Eraser which can easily overwrite and erase all the data that you don’t want in other hands.
Overwriting the drive can make the data unrestorable and the drive will be useless to anyone else who gathers it by any means either by stealing or purchasing that hard drive if you sell it.
If you don’t want to sell data and you no longer need the old Hard drive then you can go to data destruction service & they will safely remove all the data from your hard drive which cannot be restored.
Disposal Options
These are some of the Disposal options that you can use safely and securely for your Laptop. I have even shared some of those methods which I use whenever I have to dispose of my laptop.
E-Recycling
You should not throw your laptop in your house or any other place because it can be recycled and there are plenty of companies that are doing this in a very good manner.
Retailers like Best Buy, electronics manufacturers like Dell or HP, and dedicated recycling centers often have drop-off facilities where you can easily drop your laptop and they will start their process. I have checked their service & it is up to the mark.
They are experts in their work, once you give your laptop to them, firstly they will extract reusable materials like (chassis, Screen, Battery, RAM, hard drive, Keyboard, Mouse, and some circuit boards, etc)
Selling
And if you need money & your laptop is still in good working condition then you can sell it on eBay, Craigslist, and Facebook Marketplace.
Just list it on these websites and potential buyers will approach you and will purchase the laptop if they like.
Donating
I like this option & more often I donate those laptops that are of no use to my team and those that are not working properly so I fix those and donate those laptops to those who can benefit from them, I like donating laptops.
The best option for disposing of the laptop is by donating it to those people who need it badly for working purposes.
Someone’s trash is someone else’s treasure, giving the Gift of technology can help a lot of people because for many communities access to technology can be a game-changer.
By donating your old laptop, you can bridge the digital divide and give someone the opportunity to:
Your laptop lying in your house gathering dust is benefiting no one, so why not give it to somebody for whom it can be very beneficial?
I know very charities & organizations that refurbish electronics and replace defective parts and make them functional for those people who need them.
Recycling involves energy consumption and extra processing which can be avoided by donating it, why recycle it when this laptop can change someone’s life?
You can donate your laptops on these websites Digital Poverty Alliance, Compudopt, and Computers with Causes.
I have donated my laptops on these websites and these people are working great in fulfilling the need of electronics to those people who are in dire need.
Data Security Peace of Mind:
Wiping a hard drive can be a tricky process, and there’s always a risk of residual data remaining.
Donating to reputable organizations ensures your data is handled securely.
They often have data destruction protocols in place before redistributing the laptops.
Feel-Good Factor:
Knowing you’ve made a positive impact on someone’s life and the environment can be incredibly rewarding.
Donating your laptop is a simple act with the potential to create significant change.
Of course, donating isn’t always the best option. If your laptop is completely non-functional or beyond repair, recycling might be the more responsible choice.
Additionally, some organizations have specific requirements for donating laptops, so research before reaching out.
Overall, donating your old laptop is a fantastic way to bridge the digital divide, promote sustainability, and feel good about doing your part for a better world.
So, consider giving your tech companion a new lease on life – you might just make someone’s day (or year)!
