What is Symbolic Artificial Intelligence?
Symbolic AI v s Non-Symbolic AI, and everything in between? by Rhett D’souza DataDrivenInvestor
This is a task that Data Science should be able to solve, which relies on the analysis of large (“Big”) datasets, and for which vast amount of data points can be generated. Identifying the inconsistencies is a symbolic process in which deduction is applied to the observed data and a contradiction identified. Generating a new, more comprehensive, scientific theory, i.e., the principle of inertia, is a creative process, with the additional difficulty that not a single instance of that theory could have been observed (because we know of no objects on which no force acts). Generating such a theory in the absence of a single supporting instance is the real Grand Challenge to Data Science and any data-driven approaches to scientific discovery. It will also be important to identify fundamental limits for any statistical, data-driven approach with regard to the scientific knowledge it can possibly generate. For example, the set of Gödel numbers for halting Turing machines can, arguably, not be “learned” from data or derived statistically, although the set can be characterized symbolically.
Are LLMs intelligent?
An LLM does NOT possess “intelligence” — because they don't really understand. However, I agree that it does a near-perfect simulation of intelligence. At least in terms of how we have defined our go-to intelligence test — the Turing Test.
Our chemist was Carl Djerassi, inventor of the chemical behind the birth control pill, and also one of the world’s most respected mass spectrometrists. We began to add in their knowledge, inventing knowledge engineering as we were going along. These experiments amounted to titrating into DENDRAL more and more knowledge. It may seem like Non-Symbolic AI is this amazing, all-encompassing, magical solution which all of humanity has been waiting for. The contrast between these two radically different models can be summed up in the diagrams in Figure 1.10. It is of course impossible to give credit to all nuances or all important recent contributions in such a brief overview, but we believe that our literature pointers provide excellent starting points for a deeper engagement with neuro-symbolic AI topics. Symbolic AI and Neural Networks are distinct approaches to artificial intelligence, each with its strengths and weaknesses. This step is vital for us to understand the different components of our world correctly. Our target for this process is to define a set of predicates that we can evaluate to be either TRUE or FALSE. This target requires that we also define the syntax and semantics of our domain through predicate logic. Finally, we can define our world by its domain, composed of the individual symbols and relations we want to model.

As much as new models push the boundaries of what is possible, the natural moat for every organization is the quality of its datasets and the governance structure (where data is coming from, how data is being produced, enriched and validated). In one of my latest experiments, I used Bard (based on PaLM 2) to analyze the semantic markup of a webpage. On the left, we see the analysis in a zero-shot mode without external knowledge, and on the right, we see the same model with data injected in the prompt (in context learning). Returning from New York, where I attended the Knowledge Graph Conference, I had time to think introspectively about the recent developments in generative artificial intelligence, information extraction, and search.

Learning differentiable functions can be done by learning parameters on all sorts of parameterized differentiable functions. Deep learning framed a particularly fruitful parameterized differentiable function class as deep neural networks, capable to approximate incredibly complex functions over inputs with extremely large dimensionality. Now, if we give up the constraint that the function we try to learn is differentiable, what kind of representation space can we use to describe these functions?
It had the first self-hosting compiler, meaning that the compiler itself was originally written in LISP and then ran interpretively to compile the compiler code. Early work covered both applications of formal reasoning emphasizing first-order logic, along with attempts to handle common-sense reasoning in a less formal manner. Logic as Knowledge Regularization
That is, a symbol offers a level of abstraction above the concrete and granular details of our sensory experience, an abstraction that allows us to transfer what we’ve learned in one place to a problem we may encounter somewhere else. In a certain sense, every abstract category, like chair, asserts an analogy between all the disparate objects called chairs, and we transfer our knowledge about one chair to another with the help of the symbol. Insofar as computers suffered from the same chokepoints, their builders relied on all-too-human hacks like symbols to sidestep the limits to processing, storage and I/O. As computational capacities grow, the way we digitize and process our analog reality can also expand, until we are juggling billion-parameter tensors instead of seven-character strings. Since its foundation as an academic discipline in 1955, Artificial Intelligence (AI) research field has been divided into different camps, of which symbolic AI and machine learning. While symbolic AI used to dominate in the first decades, machine learning has been very trendy lately, so let’s try to understand each of these approaches and their main differences when applied to Natural Language Processing (NLP).
However, distributed representations are not symbolic representations; they are neither directly interpretable nor can they be combined to form more complex representations. One of the main challenges will be in closing this gap between distributed representations and symbolic representations. Symbolic approaches to Artificial Intelligence (AI) represent things within a domain of knowledge through physical symbols, combine symbols into symbol expressions, and manipulate symbols and symbol expressions through inference processes.
symbolic ai, also known as “Good Old-Fashioned Artificial Intelligence” (GOFAI), refers to the approach in artificial intelligence research that emphasizes the use of symbols and rules to solve problems. To extract knowledge, data scientists have to deal with large and complex datasets and work with data coming from diverse scientific areas. Artificial Intelligence (AI), i.e., the scientific discipline that studies how machines and algorithms can exhibit intelligent behavior, has similar aims and already plays a significant role in Data Science.
- The early pioneers of AI believed that “every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it.” Therefore, symbolic AI took center stage and became the focus of research projects.
- This fits particularly well with what is called the developmental approach in AI (also in robotics), taking inspiration from developmental psychology in order to understand how children are learning, and in particular how language is grounded in the first years.
- Achieving interactive quality content at scale requires deep integration between neural networks and knowledge representation systems.
- Many of the concepts and tools you find in computer science are the results of these efforts.
- Differentiable theorem proving [53,54], neural Turing machines [20], and differentiable neural computers [21] are promising research directions that can provide the general framework for such an integration between solving optimization problems and symbolic representations.

Neuro-symbolic AI offers the potential to create intelligent systems that possess both the reasoning capabilities of symbolic AI along with the learning capabilities of neural networks. This book provides an overview of AI and its inner mechanics, covering both symbolic and neural network approaches. The only way to solve real language understanding problems, which enterprises need to tackle to obtain measurable ROI on their AI investments, is to combine symbolic AI with other techniques based on ML to get the best of both worlds. Being the first technology created and widely used to mimic human understanding of language, it is not a limitation but a significant value addition because it is well-known and can be used in predictable and explainable ways (no “black boxes” here).

What is symbolic AI vs neural AI?
Symbolic AI relies on explicit rules and algorithms to make decisions and solve problems, and humans can easily understand and explain their reasoning. On the other hand, Neural Networks are a type of machine learning inspired by the structure and function of the human brain.
